His diverse career background as a trial lawyer and insight as trial and appellate judge serves well to help litigants resolve a wide array of civil disputes. Judge Covello was known as a \u201clawyer\u2019s judge,\u201d and is a \u201cclient\u2019s lawyer.\u201d Since leaving the bench in 2011, Covello has become one of the most popular and successful neutrals in New York. He was voted a \u201cBest Individual Arbitrator\u201d by lawyers and claim professionals in the\u00a0<em>New York Law Journal<\/em>\u00a0annual survey for nine consecutive years (2013-2021).<\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); background-color: var( --e-global-color-617b1d17 );\">Judge Covello\u2019s 16 years on the bench culminated in his appointments by the Governor, first as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department, and ultimately to one of the seven seats on the Second Department\u2019s constitutional bench. Judge Covello authored numerous opinions. Notable cases include\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); background-color: var( --e-global-color-617b1d17 );\">People v. Lewis<\/em><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); background-color: var( --e-global-color-617b1d17 );\">\u00a0(56 AD3d 15) and\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); background-color: var( --e-global-color-617b1d17 );\">Matter of Government Employees Ins. Co. v. Lopez<\/em><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); background-color: var( --e-global-color-617b1d17 );\">\u00a0(44 AD3d 256).<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-2b4cd4d7 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"2b4cd4d7\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2afbc59f\" data-id=\"2afbc59f\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5919504 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5919504\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Prior to his appointment to the Appellate Division, Judge Covello served as a trial judge in the Supreme Court, Nassau County; on the Appellate Term for the Ninth and Tenth Judicial Districts; and as a trial judge in the District Court, Nassau County.<\/p><p>Before taking the bench, Judge Covello spent 16 years in the private practice of law, both with respected firms, and in his own practice. While in private practice, Judge Covello was associate lead counsel in the celebrated case of\u00a0<em>In Re: Agent Orange<\/em>, and served as counsel to both the Nassau County Police Indemnification Review Board, and the Town of Oyster Bay Zoning Board of Appeals.<\/p><p>Judge Covello was an Adjunct Professor of Law at Hofstra University School of Law, teaching, among other classes, advanced appellate advocacy.<\/p><p>Judge Covello is a veteran of the United States Army, having volunteered upon his completion of secondary school. While serving he was selected for and served in the U.S. Army Presidential Honor Guard in Arlington, Virginia.<\/p><p>After the military Judge Covello attended the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he graduated magna cum laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Judge Covello received his law degree from Hofstra University School of Law, and has been honored with the George M. Estabrook Alumni Association\u2019s Distinguished Service Award.
